Key takeaways
- Check the outside of a laptop parcel before you sign for it, and photograph any crushed corner, puncture, re-taped seam or wet patch with the shipping label in view.
- Open the parcel the same day and film the opening from the sealed box onwards: the video shows what state the laptop arrived in.
- Look the laptop over before you switch it on, then check that it starts, the screen is clear, and the keyboard, touchpad and charger work.
- Report any problem to the seller on the day it arrives. For a CZ-4, Citzen suggests messaging its WhatsApp hotline that day, before using the notebook further.
- MCMC urges consumers to report damaged or lost parcels to the courier first, then to the commission through the Aduan SKMM portal if the answer is unsatisfactory.

What should you check before you accept a laptop parcel?
Before you accept a laptop parcel, look at the outside of the box while the courier is still there. Crushed or split corners, punctures, a seam that has been cut and re-taped, a rattle, or a box that is wet are all signs worth recording. Photograph each side of the box with the shipping label in view, so the parcel's condition at the door is on record before it enters your home.
A box in poor condition does not mean the laptop inside is damaged, and a perfect box does not prove it is fine. The point of this check is the record: if a problem turns up later, photographs taken at the door show whether the parcel was already damaged when it arrived.
Malaysian courier companies are licensed under the Postal Services Act 2012 and regulated by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). In a 2021 statement reported by Malay Mail, MCMC urged consumers to "understand and be aware of their rights before choosing a service from a courier company", and reminded licensed couriers that breaching subsidiary legislation under the Act can bring a fine of up to RM300,000, up to three years' imprisonment, or both.
How should you open a laptop parcel and record it?
Open a laptop parcel on the day it arrives, on a clear table, and record the opening on your phone from the moment the sealed box is in frame. Cut only the tape, not deep into the box, so nothing inside is scratched. Keep filming as you lift the laptop out, and keep every piece of packing until you are sure the laptop works.
One continuous video is better than a set of photos, because it shows the box sealed, opened and emptied without a gap. It is the simplest way to show a seller or a courier that a fault was there when the box was opened, not caused afterwards.
Do not throw the box away in the first week. If the laptop has to go back to the seller or to a service centre, a box it already travelled in safely is the best way to send it. Citzen's support page notes that postage and delivery on a warranty claim are paid by the customer, so a box you have kept saves buying new packing for it.
What should you check on the laptop before you switch it on?
Before switching a new laptop on, look it over in good light. Check the lid and the corners for dents or cracks, open the lid slowly and watch the hinges move evenly, look across the screen for cracks or pressure marks, and check that every key sits level. Look into the ports for debris. Anything you find now is easier to report than a fault found days later.
- Lid and corners. Dents, cracks or scuffs, especially on a corner that matches a crushed corner of the box.
- Hinges. The lid opens smoothly, holds its angle and does not creak or catch.
- Screen surface. No cracks, chips or pressure marks when the screen is off and seen at an angle.
- Keyboard and touchpad. No missing, loose or raised keys; the touchpad surface is unmarked.
- Ports and vents. Clear of debris, with nothing bent inside a port.
Do not try to open the laptop's case or tighten anything yourself. Citzen's support page suggests not opening the notebook or attempting a repair until you have asked, so that a fault can still be seen as it happened.
What should you check when you first switch it on?
When you first switch a new laptop on, check five things before you install anything: it starts and reaches the setup screen, the screen shows no lines or dark patches, the keyboard and touchpad respond, the charger charges it, and it connects to your Wi-Fi.
Type a few lines in any text box to try every row of keys, and move the pointer to every corner of the screen to check the touchpad and the edges of the display.
Keep the first session short and simple. Installing many programs before these checks makes it harder to tell whether a later problem came with the laptop or with something added afterwards. Our guide to setting up a new laptop for school covers accounts, updates and backups once the laptop has passed.
What should you do if the laptop arrives damaged or does not start?
If a laptop arrives damaged or does not start, stop using it and report it to the seller on the same day, with photos of the box, the packing and the fault, and your unboxing video. For a CZ-4, Citzen suggests messaging its WhatsApp hotline on the day it arrives, before you use the notebook further, and describing what you see. Keep that chat as your record.
The CZ-4's 1-year local warranty, which starts on the date of purchase, covers malfunctioning components and manufacturing defects. It does not cover damage from negligence, mishandling or misuse. A dent in the lid and a laptop that will not start can have different causes.
If the parcel was clearly damaged by the courier, report that to the courier company as well. MCMC's advice, as reported by Malay Mail, is that "if there are any damaged or loss items, consumers are urged to contact the service provider to report a complaint", and that consumers who are not satisfied with the solution may lodge a formal complaint with the commission via the Aduan SKMM portal.
| What you find | Contact first | Have ready |
|---|---|---|
| Box crushed or wet | The courier and the seller | Door photos, label |
| Laptop dented or cracked | The seller | Unboxing video, photos |
| Laptop will not start | The seller | What you tried, photos |
| Fault days later | The seller, under warranty | Order chat, description |
How do you check a CZ-4 ordered from Citzen?
A CZ-4 is ordered in a WhatsApp chat with Citzen, so that chat is where its delivery is arranged and where any problem on arrival should be reported. Citzen delivers free nationwide and ships orders within 3 working days; to Sabah and Sarawak, allow up to 3 weeks. When it arrives, run the same checks as for any laptop, and message the hotline on the day if anything is wrong.
Before you order, settle in the chat what comes with the order rather than assuming, as Citzen's support page advises, so that you know what should be in the box when it arrives. Citzen operates a no-refund policy, which makes settling these points before you pay part of buying safely; our guide to buying a laptop on WhatsApp lists the questions to ask.
The hotline is +60 12-565 2091 and replies Monday to Saturday, 9am to 1pm; messages sent after hours are answered as soon as possible. Citzen's three service centres, in Ipoh, Kota Kinabalu and Sibu, are open Monday to Saturday, 9am to 5pm. Frequently asked questions
Should I open a laptop parcel in front of the courier?
Check the outside of the box while the courier is there: crushed corners, punctures, re-taped seams or a wet box are worth photographing with the shipping label before you sign or accept it. Open it as soon as you can afterwards, the same day, and record the opening on video from the sealed box onwards.
What should I do if my laptop arrives damaged in Malaysia?
Stop using it, photograph the box, the packing and the damage, and message the seller the same day with those photos. For a CZ-4, Citzen suggests messaging its WhatsApp hotline on the day it arrives, before you use the notebook further. If the courier damaged the parcel, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) urges consumers to report it to the courier first.
Who do I complain to if a courier damages my parcel?
To the courier company first. MCMC, which regulates courier companies licensed under the Postal Services Act 2012, says consumers with damaged or lost items should report a complaint to the service provider, and can lodge a formal complaint with the commission through the Aduan SKMM portal if they are not satisfied with the solution.
Does the CZ-4 warranty cover damage in delivery?
Citzen's warranty covers malfunctioning components and manufacturing defects, not damage from negligence, mishandling or misuse. Whatever the cause, report a problem found on arrival to Citzen on WhatsApp on the day it arrives, with photos, and keep the chat as your written record.
Should I keep the laptop box and packing?
Yes, at least until you are sure the laptop works. The box and packing are evidence if the parcel was damaged in transit, and Citzen's support page notes that postage on a warranty claim is paid by the customer, so a good box makes it easier to send the notebook safely if it ever has to travel.
